Transport Phenomena in Bioprocess Engineering
Prof. Selvaraju Narayanasamy · IIT Guwahati
About
This course involves the study of momentum, heat, and mass transfer essential to understand and optimize biotechnological systems. This course introduces the fundamental principles, covering definitions, units, and dimensionless numbers critical to analyzing transport processes. It explores fluid flow dynamics, including rheology and the behavior of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids like fermentation broths. Also, heat and mass transfer principles are addressed, focusing on conduction, convection, diffusion, and their applications in bioprocess systems such as fermenters, packed beds, fluidized beds and distillation columns. Through theoretical insights and case studies, this course bridges concepts to practical bioprocess applications.
