Opulently dressed light-skinned man and woman drink at a small table. A mirror behind them reflects a crowd. Her blue dress and dark hat dominate.

Where the art comes from

Every work here is in the open-access collection of the museum that keeps it, which marks it as in the public domain or free to use (CC0, the Public Domain Mark, or for Wikimedia Commons and Europeana a free licence). The pictures are shown from the museums' own image servers; nothing is copied to this site. Each work's page names its museum, its credit line and rights statement, and links to the work's page there.

Who sees what

Museums give their works no age ratings, so each one is placed from what its museum says about it: its title, subject terms and description of the picture. Nothing a museum makes public is left out for nudity; explicit sexual content (erotica, shunga) is not listed at all.

Little OnesGentle pictures of animals, flowers, landscapes, the sea, still life and children's book illustration, with nothing dark or frightening.
KidsWorks whose subjects are plainly safe: nature, places, still life, the night sky, winter, maps, ornament, children's books; no people, faith, myth or history among them.
TweensPortraits, everyday life, faith, music and dress, and objects, when nothing else holds them back.
TeensEverything we cannot tell about, myths and history, war and soldiers, the Crucifixion, death, hunting, drink and tobacco.
AdultNudity (classical nudes included), violence and gore (battles, martyrdoms, executions, anatomy), and racist caricature.

The slideshow keeps to works for teens and younger unless an adult profile asks for everything.
