About
Up till the early 1990s, literacy was defined as the ability to read and write. However in the mid-1990s, the New London Group revolutionized educators and researchers' perception of literacy and coined the term multiliteracies. Multiliteracies point to the multiple, cultural forms of expression, representation and linguistic diversity enhanced or facilitated by technologies. Rebecca Y. Bayeck discussed her research on the gameplay of the African board game Songo, and on Cartes de Visite (CDVs) portraying African Americans in the 19th century. She will share frameworks for uncovering literacies in Songo gameplay, CDVs, and highlight the importance of preservation for libraries.
