About
Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Professor John Fraser Howe, University of Minnesota, discusses his education and early career, starting with his time in the Navy. He discusses studying with Merle Prunty at the University of Georgia and Malcolm Proudfoot at Northwestern University. At the University of Indiana he took seminars from Carl Sauer and Estyn Evans, which caused him to consider the commonality of his varied interests which was the morphology of landscape. Howe asks Dow to explain how Geographers on Film got started and Dow gives a short history of the series and how he selects interviewees. Howe explains how, as an editor, he selects papers for the journal, the Annals of the American Association of Geographers.
