About

Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, Richard Hartshorne, Professor Emeritus, University of Wisconson, discusses his education and early career, his early research to determind the factors that led to concntration of industries in a particular location and the relative cost of shipping. He answers questions about his interest in political geography, his studies in Germany just prior to World War II, his work with German geography Johann Sölch, and his books, The nature of geography (1939) and Perspctive on the nature of geography (1959).
