About
Geographers on film is a collection of recorded video interviews conducted with hundreds of geographers between August 1970 and the early 1990s, including scholars who have shaped the discipline. The interviews highlight the rapid transformations in technology throughout the 20th century that brought about vast changes in people's daily lives and in how geographers conducted research. In this interview, David Harvey, professor of geography and environmental engineering at Johns Hopkins University talks about his book, Explanation in geography. He discusses his interest in moral, social, and philosophical questions in the contex of a particular problem, and how his move to Baltimore offered him the chance to take a good look at urban problems and to think about urbanization in the light of social and moral principles. He discusses Karl Marx's views of society, geography and urban space economy, and Paul Wheatley's ideas on urbanism. He talks about the progress of his training as a historical geographer to his interest in quantitative analysis, then social-philosophical analysis, then urban problems, helping him to have a more coherent view of society.
