Production and Operations Management: Theory and Application
Prof. Sanjib Chowdhury · IIT Kharagpur
About
Production and operations management (POM) involves planning, controlling, and coordinating the resources required to manufacture and deliver goods and services efficiently. This involves transforming inputs (such as labour, raw materials, and technology) into outputs (finished products or services) with optimal use of resources.
The course is designed to equip students, academics, and professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage the systems, resources, and processes involved in this endeavour. The course covers the entire operations spectrum such as competitiveness, strategy and productivity, product design, forecasting – time series, capacity planning, process selection and facility layout, and facility location planning.
It further deals with quality management, quality control, aggregate planning, master scheduling, MRP, and inventory management. It also discusses JIT and lean operations, scheduling, project management including network and critical path analysis, and management of waiting lines. It covers both theory and application.
The course focuses on efficient operations that optimise costs, reduce waste, and improve quality to gain a sustainable competitive advantage.
Intended audience: Management students (PGDM, MBA, BBA), BE, ME students in Mechanical/Industrial/Production Engineering. Academics, Practicing professionals, and managers at various levels.
Prerequisites: Must be an undergraduate student and have completed 10 + 2 Board Exams.
