About

Some time ago, JAWS author Peter Benchley approached SURVIVAL's New York Office with the outline for a documentary and confessed that he was unhappy about the bad name he had given sharks. This SURVIVAL special attempts to give the world's most feared and hated predator a new image.

Benchley wanted to show that sharks are not the evil monsters of his film, but beautiful and sadly misunderstood creatures, often quite harmless.

This documentary concentrates on the work of two of the world's top shark scientists, Americans Dr. Don Nelson and Richard Johnson, who have carried out much of their research in the Pacific. It investigates what makes sharks attack and gives advice on how to recognize when an attack is imminent.

While the film doesn't attempt to disguise the fact that some sharks are killers, it points out that not all 250 species are as deadly as the Great White of JAWS fame. Some are so harmless you could stroke them.

BONUS: "Predators of the Wild" was a VHS series that served as the American release of some Survival programs, and this version of the "Shark" episode features the narration done by William Hootkins as well as a more ominous sounding soundtrack.

Human-made No record of this work says a model made it. What this means.
