About

Rough workprint of the 1986 film, adapted from the Off-Broadway musical (which in turn was based on the 1960 Roger Corman movie). Includes extended, alternate and truncated takes, deleted lines, scenes and more. This is NOT the "John Smith" workprint that began to leak in 2012 (which included the complete final edit of "The Meek Shall Inherit" and a truncated version of "Don't Feed the Plants") - this variation has been more widely circulating in fandom for a number of years. The finale was missing, so I've included the black-and-white workprint ending which appeared on the quickly-recalled 1998 DVD release, plus I've removed the numerous reel change logos that interrupted the flow of the film.

Running 8 minutes longer than the director's cut and 15 minutes longer than the theatrical version, this VHS dupe has temp music tracks, incomplete effects and other anomalies. Some of the most notable differences include:

-No opening or closing credits. -Virtually all of Mr. Mushnick's lines are compiled from different takes than those featured in the final cut of the film. -Alternate music cues (business is booming montage, Skid Row Radio, etc.) -Alternate shots during "Skid Row." -Includes Audrey's line "You don't meet nice guys when you live on Skid Row, Mr. Mushnick" (which was featured in many trailers). -A different opening to "Grow for Me" features the Greek chorus and there's an extended sequence as Seymour realizes the plant wants his blood. -Weird Wink Wilkinson has an extended machine gun gag; plus more shots of the patrons in the studio are shown. -An alternate take opens "Somewhere That's Green," Audrey's deleted soliloquy is included and the original shot of Audrey's segue from the magazine fantasy back to reality is featured. -Includes missing "pop quiz" verses during "Some Fun Now." -Arthur Denton's scene is severely abridged. -Includes extended versions of Orin's death, dismemberment and disposal. The tone of this whole sequence is much darker than in the final cut. -An alternate sequence of Seymour in bed the next morning is shown. -Alternate takes of various lines prior to "Suddenly, Seymour." -Different cutaways to the chorus during "Suppertime." -"The Meek Shall Inherit" includes Seymour's soliloquy (with one brief "missing scene" shot substituted from the John Smith workprint). -Extended ending to the Channel 8 interview scene after Seymour & Audrey depart the shop. -Seymour's original proposal to Audrey is complete with talk of Mr. Mushnick and the reprise of "Suddenly, Seymour." -Alternate vocal deliveries of "Feed Me" as Seymour attempts to sneak out of the shop, and an extended sequence of Audrey II preparing to telephone Audrey.

The VOBs are untouched from the fan-made DVD (complete with original reel change logos) and there are additional VOBs with the b/w workprint ending (including the alternate Frank Oz commentary track), TV spots and trailers from the instantly-recalled 1998 Special Edition DVD release.

The movie itself is widely and legally available (both in a theatrical and director's cut), and if you're a fan I urge you to support the filmmakers and studio by purchasing the film. This alternate workprint edit is only being shared as a courtesy to fellow fans for comparison purposes. No infringement is intended.
