Opening the book…
This supplemental section provides an overview of several specific social determinants of health -- such as poverty, economic stability, education, and neighborhood quality. This allows you, the reader, a deeper dive into understanding how these determinants affect health and what can be done about it. This section is drawn from the Open Stax textbook, Population Health for Nurses, and therefore the emphasis is on what nurses can do about these social factors affecting health. Keep in mind that many nurses work in or with public health departments, and many other public health workers collaborate with nurses, so I think this information will be relevant to a broader swath of public health workers.
- 3.14.6: The Cumulative Effect of Inequalities on Health
- The section explains health equity and inequities, emphasizing that health disparities are often caused by social determinants of health (SDOH), which have a larger impact on health outcomes than clinical care. To achieve health equity, resources must be distributed based on individual needs rather than equally among all.
