Opening the book…
1. Measure the room temperature to 0.1oC with the help of a thermometer. Record the pressure of the gas sample in the steel ball.
2. Your instructor will have a 2000 mL beaker, ¾-full of ice and tap water. Mix the ice and water with a glass rod. Measure and record the temperature of ice-water mixture with a thermometer to 0.1oC. Immerse the bulb of the steel ball in ice-water for 60 seconds and record the pressure.

3. Note the temperature of the hot water in a 2000 mL beaker in the fume hood. Immerse the bulb of the steel ball in the hot water for 60 seconds and record the pressure. At the same time record the temperature of hot water to 0.1oC.
4. Let the steel ball cool to room temperature for the next pair of students.
5. Fill in the table below with measurements and answer questions a through c based on your observations in full sentences.
| Surroundings | Temperature of the surroundings and gas in steel ball (oC) | Pressure of the gas in the steel ball (psi) |
| Room | ||
| Ice and water | ||
| Hot water |
a. How does the pressure of the gas change as the steel ball is place in ice-water?
b. How does the pressure of the gas change when the steel ball is place in hot water?
c. Explain your observations in questions a and b using the appropriate the gas law.
