In all fields of microbiology, the ability to measure microbial growth is extremely important. Microbial cells are extremely small and grow rapidly. It would be impossible to count every microbial cell in a population. Microbiologists utilize a number of enumerating methods to estimate the number of cells in a microbial sample. In this laboratory section, you will examine two of the methods employed by microbiologists to enumerate bacteria: viable plate counts and direct microscopic counts. As you move through the section, compare the accuracy, estimate of living cells, use of materials, and time required for the techniques surveyed.
