About this work

The warm natural light at sunset highlights the texture of the bell tower's sandstone, while in the upper section the geometric details of the openwork decorations create depth and a striking contrast of light and shadow. The 65-metre-high tower was built between 1501 and 1519 (some sources indicate 1517) to designs by the Augsburg master mason Burkhard Engelberg and completed by the Swabian architect Hans Lutz von Schussenried. The late Gothic tower with its openwork sandstone spire is the landmark of the city of Bolzano.
