About this work
The interior of the Basilica of Sarsina is solemn yet frugal and austere, with little light filtering in: the ceiling is trussed and the floor plan is a Latin cross. Instead, a valuable 12th-century pulpit, in Franco-German style, is visible and well-lit. It depicts the symbols of the four evangelists: the angel of St. Matthew, the lion of St. Mark, the eagle of St. John, and the calf of St. Luke. Then, at the foot of the altar, a marble bas-relief with a gabled pediment, dating back to the 10th century, executed on a 7th-century carved marble. It depicts Christ enthroned, with St. Gabriel with a winnowing fan on his left and St. Michael trampling the devil on his right. Finally, the Crucifix, which integrates well into the upper part of the apse, was made in 1400 by an unknown artist.
