天下分け目の合戦のカギを握ることになった毛利家重臣・吉川広家の敗北から明日を生きるための教訓を探る！1561年、毛利元就の次男・吉川元春の三男として生まれた広家は父と兄が相次いで亡くなったため、27歳で家督を継承。小早川家と共に毛利家を支えるキーパーソンとなった。秀吉に気に入られ、14万石の大名となった広家は文禄・慶長の役で武功を挙げるが、毛利家中では権力強化を図る毛利輝元に疎んじられた。
秀吉の死後、豊臣政権を二分する戦いが始まり、輝元が西軍の総大将となるが、一方で広家は朝鮮出兵で関係を深めた諸将を通じ、徳川家康に接近、関ヶ原の戦いの直前に家康と不戦の密約を結んだ。その結果、西軍主力の毛利勢は動かず、東軍が大勝利を収めた。ところが、戦後、家康は広家との約束を反故にし、毛利家は大減封され、広家も独立大名の座を失ってしまった。広家が家康と交わした約束はなぜ、守られなかったのか？
毛利家の所領は周防・長門の2ヵ国のみとなり、吉川家は岩国3万石を与えられた。毛利家は広家のおかげで改易を免れたが、広家は毛利家中から強く批判され、その後、重職を任されることはなかった。広家は子孫のためにあるものを残した。長さ数メートルにも及ぶ家訓である。毛利のためを思ってしたことが誤解を招き、軋轢を生んでしまった広家が伝えたかった思いとは？広家の敗北から学ぶ教訓は...「思い込みは禁物」！
