「洞ヶ峠を決め込む」という言葉の由来となった大和の戦国大名・筒井順慶の敗北から現代に通じる教訓を探る！1549年、筒井順昭の長男として生まれた順慶はわずか2歳で家督を継ぐが、11歳の時に松永久秀に筒井城を奪われ、その後、何度も久秀と激闘を展開。1568年に織田信長が上洛すると、順慶は信長に臣従、28歳にして大和の統治を任される。そして翌1577年、信貴山城の戦いに従軍し、宿敵・久秀を滅ぼした。
その後、順慶は信長の重臣・明智光秀の与力として数々の合戦に参加していたが、1582年、光秀が本能寺の変を起こすと、頭を抱える。与力として支えた光秀に与するか、打倒光秀を目指す羽柴秀吉に味方するか。順慶は悩み抜いた末に秀吉への加担を決断するが、順慶が参陣する前に山崎の戦いが起き、光秀が討伐されたため、遅れて参陣した順慶は秀吉から厳しい叱責を受けてしまった。順慶はなぜ、合戦に間に合わなかったのか？
その後、秀吉の家臣となった順慶は大和の支配権を認められ、秀吉への忠誠を誓う。そして、数々の合戦に参加するが、1584年、小牧・長久手の戦いの最中に病状が悪化し、36歳で波瀾の生涯を閉じた。家督を継いだ筒井定次は四国攻めの後、伊賀に移封され、伊賀上野藩主となるが、1608年、改易に処され、1615年、嫡男と共に切腹を余儀なくされてしまった。順慶の敗北から学ぶ教訓は...「腹を決めたら素早く動け」！
