About
Libraries and archives have positioned us as leaders in critical and practical engagement with new technologies, including AI. Is it possible to use AI to improve our services and educate our communities about AI use, while maintaining our position as one of society’s most trusted institutions? Our team of academic librarians developed the Viewfinder toolkit to help practitioners reflect upon how we might use AI in alignment with our own values and the values of library stakeholders. Incorporating professional library values such as Privacy and Consent, Trust, Transparency, Literacy, Service Quality, and Access, Viewfinder aids practitioners in making values-informed decisions about whether, when, and how to use AI. The goal of the toolkit is to help practitioners take actions that align with our professional values and reduce harm to our communities. This presentation will describe the research that informed the toolkit and then guide participants through a sample use case of the toolkit.
