About
Join Ashley Rose Young, American History Curator in the Rare Book Division, for a closer look at The Printed Walk, an artist’s book by Lindsay Schmittle. Inspired by her 2,180-mile Appalachian Trail thru-hike, Schmittle transforms her journey into letterpress prints—”visual interpretations” of the landscapes she encountered. Gathering natural materials like charcoal, mica, and clay, she created inks sourced directly from the trail, blurring the line between representation and reality. Her work reflects both the simplicity of trail life and the complexity of the natural world. The Printed Walk invites us to see the environment as something to observe, engage with, and reimagine.
