About
Quebec mandolinist Jonathan Bélanger performing “Alma Andalucia (Soul of Andalucia),” from a field recording of Frank Cunha on mandolin and Joaquim Flores on guitar, recorded by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Oakland, California on April 12, 1939. From the W.P.A. California Folk Music Project collection (AFC 1940/001: AFS 3879 B1). The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress challenged musical artists to interpret material from its unparalleled archive of ethnographic recordings of traditional folk music. Artists were asked to put their own spin on these archival treasures, and to perform them at a special showcase during the Folk Alliance International conference in Montreal, Canada, in 2025. The showcase was recorded for this webcast.
