About
French-American harpsichordist Justin Taylor talks about his recital titled "Fandango", a program of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and Antonio Soler. Taylor discusses aspects of the vibrant, cosmopolitan European musical culture that influenced both composers, including the world of Italian opera coloring Scarlatti's dramatic, operatic writing for the keyboard. Both were strongly inspired by Iberian popular music, he says, writing pieces capturing its essence in flourishes that suggest guitars, dancers and castanets. Two other topics of the conversation are the question of performing Scarlatti on the harpsichord vs. the modern piano, and Taylor's interest in exploring historic keyboard instruments from many periods.
