About

Jerry Bransford, who is currently a guide at Mammoth Cave National Park, shares stories from multiple generations of his family who have worked in and around the cave. In the 19th century, many cave guides were slaves and their work earned them a uniquely high status in their communities. He explains how these African American guides were forced out during the transition period when Mammoth Cave became a national park. He expresses hope that interviews like this one will "tell the true document in a tasteful way." "I feel that I have opportunity to kind of bring them back, the Bransfords back," he says. Bransford credits Joy Lyons (see interview afc2013104_00701) for encouraging him to take a position in the park and continue his personal, family-related work and research.
