About

Keven Neff began his career as a junior high school science teacher. In search of summer employment, he applied to work at Mammoth Cave, since it was only a day's drive from his home in Ada, Ohio. After several unsuccessful attempts, he was hired at Mammoth Cave, first as a seasonal ranger and then, in 1969, as a full-time ranger. In this interview, Neff shares personal thoughts on many aspects of ranger life, including family dynamics surrounding moving; the uniform and how it signals memberships in a close-knit, service-oriented folk group; commonalities between his occupations as a classroom teacher and a park ranger; and changes in the way cave guides interpret the underground world for park visitors. In his more than 40 years at Mammoth, Neff has worked in various park jobs, including interpreter, guide, and law enforcement, and has also spent time "top-side" as a naturalist interpreting the surface environment of Mammoth Cave National Park. Neff also discusses historic changes and exploration by such groups as the National Speleological Society.
