Virus โ ๐ฅ Educational Films from the 1960's
"From KQED in San Francisco and the Virus Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, comes a distinguished series of eight half-hour programs on the nature of the virus. Prepared using a National Science Foundation grant, the series is designed to explain to the viewer some of the basic facts about viruses, those structures so essential to life and health, facts which for the most part have only been discovered in the past twenty-five years. Drawing on advanced scientific techniques such as microcinematography, electron microscopy and freeze drying, as well as on animation, large-scale models and drawings, the programs combine lectures with demonstrations to give the viewer an extremely vivid picture of this complicated topic. Particularly emphasized are facts about the virus' relation to bacterial disease, to polio, and to cancer, and new information about viruses which may not yet be generally known to students of biology or to the non-scientific public."
8 OLD Television Classroom FILMS, from 1960, produced by KQED (San Francisco) for Classroom Use ... I think.
Although we have learned considerably more about Viruses since 1960: that doesn't negate the foundations of understanding we built upon. I imagine most of this is still taught in the introduction to viruses courses of today. (You can find an amazing amount of old classroom films moldering on YouTube ... )
NET ๐ฅ - National Educational Television - was the direct predecessor to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) ... and to this very day: PBS is still known for producing the highest quality educational and news programming. NET was launched on May 16 1954 by some forward thinking people - who hoped television had a more noble purpose, and destiny, than just being a machine for separating money from slack jawed hypnotized consumers. NET is older than most of us - and the "Grandfather" of all educational television!!!
This really ancient series was at the START of a continuing tradition of excellence in educational video ... so now you can see what the state of the art in educational television was: Sixty Three Years ago. Television was just beginning to be explored as an educational medium at the time ... ripe with potential! Remember, this was still 9 years before Sesame Street would be Born ... literally the DAWN of Educational Television!!!
And so, I think this series might be more 'Moldy Oldie' than 'Golden Oldie' - I imagine bleary eyed cave men gathered around ... and staring at a tiny x-ray spewing box with a fuzzy little round picture in it - Oh, This ought to cure your insomnia!
Enough people have Favorited this series: that I'm glad it has been revived after all.
