Language And Linguistics โ˜…๐Ÿฅ… Educational Films from the 1950's

Here are 13 episodes, Produced in 1958, By META (University of Buffalo) for NET Network.

"Dr. Henry Lee Smith, Jr., of the University of Buffalo, presents an introduction to linguistics covering the nature of language, its structure and development. He conducts a comprehensive survey of what language really is, considering how it forms a basis for all human interaction. Dr. Smith shows the relation of linguistic science to teaching a foreign language, teaching reading and the analysis of the psychiatric interview."

I found this series from 1958 to be a real gem! English Language sentence parts and composition - in elementary school - bored me to tears: whereas I found this to be very informative. This confirmed my early impression that English (as spoken in America) is a horrible hodgepodge mongrel '57 breeds' bastard language, accreted in chunks - inherently inefficient at conveying precise information. Navaho Language is the type of meaning precision language I wish I grew up with - I did not know how crippled English was: until he showed me a Complete Language system!!! (You can find an amazing amount of old classroom films moldering on YouTube ... )

NET ๐Ÿฅ… - National Educational Television - was the direct predecessor to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) ... and to this very day: PBS is still known for producing the highest quality educational and news programming. NET was launched on May 16 1954 by some forward thinking people - who hoped television had a more noble purpose, and destiny, than just being a machine for separating money from slack jawed hypnotized consumers. NET is older than most of us - and the "Grandfather" of all educational television!!!

This really ancient series was at the Start of a continuing tradition of excellence in educational video ... so now you can see what the state of the art in educational television was: Sixty Five Years ago. Television was just beginning to be explored as an educational medium at the time ... ripe with potential! Remember, this was still 11 years before Sesame Street would be Born ... literally the dawn of Educational Television!!!
