DVD Transfer 92 consists of recordings from a VHS recording from the first half of July-August 2007
CONTENTS
1. FOX 43 News at 10 Close (July 1, 2007; apparently there had been an attempt by then-WAVY/WVBT weekend meteorologist Cheryl Nelson {later co-host of "The Coast" lifestyle show on WGNT-TV 27} of weekend anchor Leon Moore breaking out into song. The end result doesn't quite live up to the hype)
2. Good Morning America (partial; segment involving an interview/promo piece for the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie "High School Musical 2" following the surprise success of the first film in that series the year prior, with several of the stars being interviewed. Hosting that day were substitute anchors Deborah Roberts {no relation to regular co-host Robin; Deborah mentions her daughter's obsession with the songs from the first High School Musical. No word on confirmation by her husband, Today weatherman Al Roker} and David Muir {subbing for Diane Sawyer; now anchor of ABC World News Tonight} alongside weatherman Sam Champion)
3. Wheel of Fortune (2007 GSN rerun; 4000th Show with Pat Sajak and Vanna White celebrating 4000 shows...of the 1983-present syndicated version {save for a couple of scattered clips; the original 1975-91 daytime version is rarely even mentioned in terms of the show's history. Interestingly, a May 12, 2003 College Week airing included in the retrospective has one contestant, Sarah, mention her mother winning a trip to Europe after appearing in 1977 where Sarah's mother eventually met her father; resulting in Sarah saying if it wasn't for "Wheel"; she wouldn't be here}; thus instead of actual gameplay. Pat and Vanna reminisce over some of their favorite memories over the previous 3945 {nighttime} shows...as despite the 4000th show branding, this episode {originally broadcast on November 10, 2003} is actually show 3946. This is the first of four episodes I recorded that appeared as part of a tribute to series creator Merv Griffin, who had passed away on August 12, 2007 that were recorded on August 18 {the following day had a series of Jeopardy reruns as their tribute})
4. Wheel of Fortune (2007 GSN rerun; this was the April 1, 1997 "April Fools" show where Jeopardy's Alex Trebek took over hosting duties while Pat Sajak's wife, Lesly, took Vanna's spot alongside the recently introduced electronic puzzle board {which had replaced the trilon board just over a month prior} while Pat {who likewise subbed for Alex as host on Jeopardy} and Vanna - who was pregnant with daughter Giovanna at this time - played for charity {Pat for the Boy Scouts; Vanna for American Cancer Society}. Even announcer Charlie O'Donnell gets the show off save for the pre-recorded intro and prize announcement; as the intro is rather abruptly cut off to segue into Jeopardy announcer Johnny Gilbert's introduction for Alex. This would not be the first time Alex hosted "Wheel"; having - as mentioned by him - had subbed for Chuck Woolery on the daytime version in 1980, nor Johnny announced - having subbed for Charlie O'Donnell for two weeks in late 1995 as well as alternating with O'Donnell as a substitute after Charlie's replacement, Jack Clark, left in May 1988 due to failing health and once more for two weeks in 2010 shortly before O'Donnell's death)
5. Wheel of Fortune (2007 GSN rerun. The only daytime episode in this batch {and a fairly rare rerun of a daytime episode, as GSN apparently didn't show very many of those - not helping matters is that Merv Griffin Enterprises tended to wipe episodes for reuse as late as 1985; long after all of the major networks ended that practice. This is the January 9, 1989 episode that marked the last episode of the daytime version {then airing on NBC} hosted by Pat Sajak {apparently; the episode was scheduled to air on January 6 - a Friday - but the schedule was thrown off due to NBC carrying the Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 2, 1989} due to his departure to host the ill-fated Pat Sajak Show on CBS {coincidentally premiering that night} while {wisely} retaining the syndicated hosting job - with former San Diego Chargers kicker Rolf Benirschke taking over until the show moved from NBC to CBS that July; after which Bob Goen took over as host for the remainder of the daytime version's run {including a return to NBC in 1991} until that version's demise at the close of the 1990-91 season. One of two episodes in this marathon where creator Merv Griffin makes an appearance {following Pat deciding to go out with kissing Vanna}. Not counting the April Fool's Day episode; this is the only episode in this batch with an announcer other than Charlie O'Donnell; as this was during the brief period where M.G. Kelly was the announcer for both versions after Jack Clark {who replaced O'Donnell in 1980 after O'Donnell gave up the job to become announcer on {Celebrity} Bullseye, Dance Fever and The Joker's Wild - O'Donnell having made that decision when it appeared that Wheel was about to be cancelled alongside High Rollers, The Hollywood Squares and Chain Reaction in favor of The David Letterman Show; only for Wheel to be spared at the last minute due to Letterman's short-lived daytime show being trimmed from 90 minutes to 60 - plus anchoring at Los Angeles station KCOP-TV 13} left in May 1988 due to declining health following a bone cancer diagnosis {for the summer reruns of that season; Pat and Vanna ended up reading the prize copy themselves}, ultimately passing away that July - with Kelly taking the role due to O'Donnell still being tied up with his responsibilities with Chuck Barris' firm. However, Kelly's struggles with prize copy resulted in his being fired in February 1989, allowing for Charlie to return to Wheel - where he remained until O'Donnell's death on November 1, 2010. This would be one of just 3 daytime episodes airing on GSN, and one of those - which I missed - would be the only Chuck Woolery episode ever to air on that channel)
6. Wheel of Fortune (2007 GSN rerun. The last of the episodes airing as part of the GSN tribute {looking through the Wheel of Fortune History page and can't find the actual date [thinking around Season 10 due to the intro] on that page. The highlight is a few snippets of performances at an Orlando dinner club with songs by Merv Griffin himself alongside his band, the Merv-Tones, and Vanna White {who would briefly dabble in a recording career of her own})
