"May we never forget"

DVD transfer 71 is a recording of evening coverage in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks (hard enough believing this has been 20 years). The vast majority of the recording is from CNN, though some snippets of CBS and ABC coverage appear in the last 20 minutes.

We start with "The World Today" joined in progress as Nic Robertson (reporting from Afghanistan) reports explosions in Kabul (the explosions, initially thought to have been a retaliatory strike from the U.S., were later said to be from the Northern Alliance in the midst of the Afghan Civil War) while Joie Chen interviews Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and former Sen./Secretary of Defense William Cohen (R-ME). We then have Aaron Brown and Paula Zahn (in New York) reporting that intelligence believed that - at minimum - groups connected to Osama bin Laden were responsible. Meanwhile, Wolf Blitzer (in Washington) notes that White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer denying that the strikes were from American military; mention of the collapse of World Trade Center 7 after being on fire much of the day (while no one was injured as the building was empty, WTC7 DID factor prominently into a number of alternate theories).

In Atlanta, Bill Hemmer recaps the events of this dark day as Air Force One lands at Andrews Air Force Base before we go to a briefing by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, flanked by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) and ranking member John Warner (R-VA; on a side note all 3 of whom passed away this year) - with Rumsfeld going out of his way to emphasize they're holding the briefing in the Pentagon despite the Pentagon being struck as well. Meanwhile, White House correspondent John King reported President George W. Bush had arrived at the White House. This is followed by reports a Marriott near what became known as Ground Zero was damaged severely enough that a collapse was possible; interviews with former CIA directors Robert Gates and James Woolsey along with Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE); a report from Jamie MacIntyre from the Pentagon and reaction from Libya's Muammar el-Qaddafi (who had been linked to sponsoring terrorism in the past).

Next is a briefing by Attorney General John Ashcroft, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta before the scene shifts to the Capitol, where we see - after remarks from Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) - a moment of silence followed by many of the members of Congress singing "God Bless America".

Following are interviews with Pat Cornelius (who escaped WTC1); former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a discussion on how the 9/11 attacks would impact travel; a leader of the New York Fire Department union reporting that up to half of the 400 firefighters dispatched to the World Trade Center were presumed dead; Greg Clarkin reporting from St. Vincent's Hospital and another disturbing report that 78 NYPD members were missing. Next is an interview with former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke; with other interviewees by Jonathan Karl at the Capitol including House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) and Sen. (and former First Lady) Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and studio interviews with FEMA director Joe Allbaugh, former Counterterrorism Coordinator Paul Bremer (who was working for Marsh & McLennan Companies, whose offices were in the North Tower) and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham (D-FL).

Following this is a brief address by President Bush.

After the President's address from the Oval Office; we have interviews with CNN senior analyst Jeff Greenfield; Cardinal Roger Mahoney, Archbishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles; former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleberger and former FBI agent James Kallstrom before Greta van Susteren remarks to finish this portion.

Next is a special edition of Larry King Live with guests including Governor George Pataki (R-NY); former Secretary of State James Baker; witnesses/survivors such as Teresa Wald, Bill Heitman, John Ivarone and Tim Cavanaugh along with Senators Warner of Virginia, Fred Thompson (R-TN); John Kerry (D-MA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA); CNN correspondent Tim O'Brien, a report that the NHL's Los Angeles Kings had two scouts {later named as scout Mark Bavis and Scouting Director Garnet "Ace" Bailey} on Flight 175 that struck the South Tower; an interview with terrorism expert Brian Jenkins; calls from viewers before the show is interrupted for a press conference with New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY; the attacks were on the day of the primaries to succeed the term-limited Giuliani as Mayor) and Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and a tribute to conservative commentator Barbara Olson {wife of Solicitor General Ted, Mrs. Olson was on the plane hitting the Pentagon})

The CNN portion concludes with a report anchored by Paula Zahn (New York); Wolf Blitzer (Washington) and Bill Hemmer (Atlanta) with segments including reports from Peter Myles recapping events, David Mattingly in Somerset County, PA; report of firefighters crushed to death including the Deputy Chief; interview of witnesses Jennifer Ruth and Scott Hess, report by Susan Candiotti on FBI executing search warrants in South Florida (picture drops out for a while after this and the picture quality dips for a bit when it returns); interviews with former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, former deputy National Security Advisor James Steinberg and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D-CT); a report by Frank Sesno and finally interviews with historians David Halberstam and David McCullough.

We then get a few minutes of CBS coverage with reports by Russ Mitchell on PLO leader Yasser Arafat denouncing the attacks and the Taliban denying Al Qaeda involvement before tossing to Dan Rather; who then throws to Sandra Hughes (reporting from LAX). Finally, the rest of the footage is from ABC; with Peter Jennings interviewing Lisa Stark before commenting on his own experience contrasting airline security in the U.S. vs. foreign airlines, particularly in the Middle East; an interview with terrorism expert John Nance (in Seattle) and a report from Bill Blakemore in Lower Manhattan (including some good news in 2 Port Authority officers pulled alive from the rubble) just before the tape ran out.

Human-made No record of this work says a model made it. What this means.
