6. ESPN NFL Special (pitting the Indianapolis Colts (7-6 coming in) hosting the 8-5 Philadelphia Eagles in a game where both squads were seeking playoff berths (the Eagles came in as part of a three-way tie with the defending champion Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins for 1st place in the NFC East; while the Colts came in as part of a three-way tie with the fading San Diego Chargers and lame-duck Houston Oilers for the last AFC wild-card spot). Calling the action were Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann and Mark Malone on the sidelines.
The game proved a one-sided affair; with the Colts blowing out Philadelphia 37-10 (including a string of 30 unanswered points -- including a 44 yard Jason Belser pick-6; with the Eagles' sole touchdown being a garbage time touchdown pass from Mark Rypien to Irving Fryar); while Marshall Faulk (plagued with injuries for most of 1996 and would finish with 589 rushing yards, the lowest total for the future Hall-of-Fame running back until his final season in 2005) ran for 2 touchdowns and barely cracked the 100 rushing yard barrier (with 101 yards) for the only time that season.
In the end, both teams would qualify for the post-season (the Colts would get that last wild-card; while Philadelphia rebounded to win their last two to finish 10-6 and with a wild-card berth {the Eagles were denied the NFC East title thanks to the Cowboys winning the common opponents record tie-breaker}) only for both teams to go one-and-done within 6 hours of each other on December 29, 1996 (the Colts - playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in a rematch of the thrilling AFC Championship game a year earlier - allowed 29 unanswered 2nd half points after the Steelers trailed 14-13 at halftime to blow the Colts out 42-14; while the Eagles lost a 14-0 game to San Francisco in muddy, heavily windy {at one point, up to 62 mph wind gusts} 3Com Park))
7. SportsCenter (this edition of what was often called "The Big Show" had Linda Cohn subbing for Keith Olbermann alongside Dan Patrick. Featured stories include: Chicago Bulls-Los Angeles Clippers highlights {the Bulls - aided by a big night from an unlikely source, backup forward Jason Caffey [23 points] won 114-96}; Toronto Raptors-Washington Bullets highlights {Toronto won 82-80 but lost rookie center Marcus Camby to a back injury}; #10 Duke Blue Devils-Florida State Seminoles highlights {the Blue Devils - seeking win #1600 - got it in overtime 72-66; the victory also marking Duke's first victory in their ACC opener in 2 years}; #7 Michigan Wolverines-Detroit Mercy Titans {Wolverines won 75-79}; #16 Minnesota Golden Gophers-Alabama Crimson Tide {the Tide rolled to a 70-67 win; this loss - the first for Minnesota - would officially see the Gophers finish 0-4 after a massive academic fraud scandal was revealed in 1999; stripping the program of victories dating to 1993-94 and vacating the Gophers' Final Four appearance that season}; a mention of NHL scoring down 9% leading to New York Islanders-Florida Panthers highlights {Panthers won 4-2}; Calgary Flames-New Jersey Devils {Devils won 2-1}; former Oakland A's catcher Terry Steinbach coming home to Minnesota as a member of the Twins; New York Yankees catcher Jim Leyritz - who hit a 3-run homer in the 8th inning of Game 4 of the 1996 World Series to tie that game; which the Yankees won en route to winning their first championship since 1978 in 6 games over the defending champion Atlanta Braves - was dealt to the Anaheim Angels for 2 players to be named later {Jeremy Blevins; Ryan Kane}; MLB collective bargaining agreement unanimously approved; look at the 49ers' prep for their rematch with the Carolina Panthers {including an invite to San Francisco camp by Pat Morita}; Philadelphia Eagles-Indianapolis Colts highlights and Mark Malone's interview with Colts backup quarterback Paul Justin {the Eagles' loss also meant that eventual Super Bowl XXXI champion Green Bay officially clinched a playoff spot}; preview of the Buffalo Bills-Seattle Seahawks {Bills - needing a win to clinch a playoff spot - had receiver Steve Tasker and linebacker Bryce Paup listed as doubtful; though running back Thurman Thomas was expected to play}; Cincinnati Bengals FB Jeff Cothran suspended for next game after pleading guilty to a DWI - his 2nd arrest in 6 months; Philadelphia 76ers-Dallas Mavericks {rookie Allen Iverson's 36 points and 11 assists weren't enough for the Sixers; as the Mavs won 106-102}; Boston Bruins-Hartford Whalers {Whalers won 4-2}; St. Louis Blues-Phoenix Coyotes {Coyotes won 3-0}; Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios signs 3 year, $10.5 million deal and Denver Nuggets-Portland Trail Blazers {Blazers won 115-104; tape ran out})
