About

(c)1987 National Football League/ABC Sports-The Walt Disney Company (actual game)

(c)2008 National Football League (re-broadcast)

2008 NFL Network rebroadcast of the 1987 Week 12 Monday Night Football game where the Seattle Seahawks (then in the AFC West; 7-3 coming in and needed a win to remain in a first-place tie with 8-3 San Diego {though the Chargers had lost their 2nd straight game 31-17 over Denver, which had risen to 7-3-1. That proved the 2nd of a season-ruining 6-game skid that saw the Chargers go from looking like they were going to run away with the division to missing the playoffs altogether in what was the final season for Charger legends Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow) hosted the (then-) Los Angeles Raiders (coming in at 3-7; had lost 7 straight after a 3-0 start) in a game originally played at the Kingdome on November 30, 1987. Calling the action for ABC is the crew of Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf (this was Dierdorf's first year on Monday Night Football after leaving CBS)

The big headline coming into the game was a series of taunts made by rookie Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth, who bragged about being able to contain Raider rookie running back Bo Jackson (playing his 3rd game after splitting time with Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals); which proved a major mistake by the Boz, as Jackson would finish the night with 221 yards on the ground, 2 rushing touchdowns (one a 91-yard run where he kept going until running into the tunnel {Dierdorf: "He might not stop 'til Tacoma"}; the other where Bo ran over the Boz en route to the end zone) along with a touchdown catch (the 221 rushing yards remains a Monday Night record and probably will be for the foreseeable future with rule changes emphasizing the pass) as the Raiders trampled Seattle 37-14.

The aftermath would see the Seahawks, after losing 13-9 to Pittsburgh the following week, rebound to win 2 of their last three to finish at 9-6 to secure the 2nd and final AFC wild-card spot before losing to the Houston Oilers 23-20 in overtime in the AFC Wild Card Game. As for the Silver and Black, they would win only one more game (34-21 over Buffalo) before dropping their last three to finish 5-10; at the time the worst finish for the Raiders since the arrival of (by now owner) Al Davis as the team's head coach in 1963; resulting in head coach Tom Flores stepping down after 9 years and 2 Super Bowl championships to move into the team's front office (Flores would eventually take a front office job in Seattle after 1988 and resurfaced as the Seahawks head coach in 1992, with far less success than with the Raiders; going 14-34 in the Pacific Northwest before being fired at the end of the 1994 season)

Furthermore, neither of the players at the center of the major showdown (Brian Bosworth/Bo Jackson) played long - Boz; who entered the 1987 supplemental draft after he and two teammates at the University of Oklahoma were suspended from playing in the Orange Bowl after testing positive for anabolic steroids, was forced to retire due to shoulder injuries in 1989. Bo - thrilling as he was in both real life and video games (where he became a virtual legend due to being nigh unstoppable in Tecmo Bowl) - didn't last much longer; as in what proved his only NFL playoff appearance (the 1990 AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals); a 34-yard run ended with a hip injury on a tackle by Bengal linebacker Kevin Walker (the injury, initially thought not to be particularly serious, led to a later diagnosis of avascular necrosis; a degenerative bone condition that resulted in Jackson having to undergo hip replacement surgery at the end of 1991, though Bo - whose true love in terms of sports was baseball - would play a few more years in MLB before finishing his career in 1994). Incidentally, the "Bo runs over Boz" touchdown would be referenced later in a 2016 Kia Sorrento commercial where Jackson appears in a Tecmo Bowl-style setting where Jackson drives up to where Bosworth is before giving him a lift to the end zone (this may also be an allusion to an alleged remark by Jackson telling Bosworth that he needed bus fare after Jackson ran over Bosworth)

Record date on July 14, 2008 based on the decision by recently-retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre to attempt a comeback (with the Packers - having moved on to allow for Aaron Rodgers to take the helm - to ultimately deal Favre to the Jets); including Favre securing an interview with Greta Van Susteren on FOX News' "On the Record"
