One of the most recent uploads so far is this recording of the 2009 NFC Championship Game pitting the top-seeded New Orleans Saints hosting the #2 seed Minnesota Vikings at the Louisiana Superdome to determine who would represent the NFC in Super Bowl XLIV. Calling the action on FOX would be Joe Buck and Troy Aikman; with Pam Oliver and Chris Myers reporting from the sidelines and coverage hosted by Curt Menefee alongside Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson and Michael Strahan.
For the 2nd time in the 3 previous NFC Championship games; the game went into overtime as a result of Brett Favre throwing an interception (2007 when Favre ended his time in Green Bay the same way) near the end of regulation, followed by the team that got the interception going on to win the game and later the Super Bowl; with the 40-year-old Favre closing what had been a renaissance season for him (4202 yards; 33 touchdown passes {his best since 1997} vs. 7 interceptions {the lowest INT total for Favre - long known as a gunslinger with a tendency to gamble on throws - since becoming a full-time starter after replacing an injured Don Majkowski in 1992} along with career-highs in completion percentage {68.4%} and passer rating {107.2; shattering his previous best of 99.5 during Favre's first MVP season in 1995}) with a disappointing ending; as the Saints won 31-28 in overtime en route to defeating the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV 31-17.
As a bonus of sorts is the first few minutes of local FOX affiliate WVBT's FOX 43 News at 10 with then WAVY/WVBT weekend anchor Lori Crouch (currently working for the City of Norfolk); with chief meteorologist Don Slater coming in on a Sunday this time. The featured story in this segment being a local response to the Haitian earthquake two weeks earlier (reported by Derrick Rose; who gained notice locally for leading WAVY's coverage of the Michael Vick dogfighting case; since 2018 has been an anchor and lead investigative reporter for Milwaukee ABC affiliate WISN). Most commercials are included.
National Anthem performance by Kris Allen, the reigning winner of American Idol.
As a sidelight; the brutal hits the Saints defense delivered would later come under closer scrutiny in the aftermath of "Bountygate" (involving allegations that Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams paid bonuses for injuring opposing players; with the incident in this game sparking the most speculation involving a hit on Favre by Saints defensive linemen Bobby McCray and Remi Ayodele that briefly saw Favre leave with an ankle injury); causing several other incidents to be looked closer (such as a hit during an interception in the previous week's Divisional Playoff Game vs. the Arizona Cardinals that saw Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner suffer a chest injury - though contrary to the speculation that later surfaced Warner would later say that his decision to retire two weeks after that game was unrelated to the injury and that he felt the hit he took was legal). That sparked an NFL investigation that culminated in the 2012 decision to suspend Williams - who had just left after the 2011 season to take the same job with the Rams - indefinitely; with head coach Sean Payton being suspended for the entire season and general manager Mickey Loomis being suspended for the first half of 2012 due to Loomis and Payton disobeying orders by team owner Tom Benson to stop the bounty program (and in Payton's case; being involved in a coverup of the bounties); with assistant head coach Joe Vitt - who was named the interim coach - himself being suspended for 6 games while four players who were believed to be the ringleaders (defensive end Will Smith; defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove and linebackers Scott Fujita {who left for Cleveland after Super Bowl XLIV} and Jonathan Vilma {who according to an NFL memo was quoted as having a $10,000 bonus for whoever could knock Favre out of the game} being suspended {in Vilma's case, the entire season} along with the Saints being docked $500,000 and losing their 2012 and 2013 2nd round draft picks. Ultimately, the player suspensions were appealed and reversed by an appeals panel just before the start of the 2012 season; and when the NFL attempted to reinstate the suspensions, they were ultimately vacated by Roger Goodell's predecessor as NFL Commissioner; Paul Tagliabue, who noted that Smith, Vilma and Hargrove (by then a free agent) were active participants (though he believed Scott Fujita - who had suffered a career-ending neck injury during the 2012 season - was innocent); but that he was holding primary responsibility on Williams and Payton (this would have unrelated ripple effects in some of Williams' other positions {as defensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins as well as his 2001-03 stint as Buffalo Bills head coach} leading to speculation of similar antics during those games, particular a 2006 Redskins game vs. the Indianapolis Colts where Peyton Manning was the target of a high-low hit similar to the one in this game that temporarily knocked out Brett Favre; with Manning complaining of losing some feeling in his neck; leading former Colts head coach and current NBC Football Night in America panelist Tony Dungy to speculate about whether that might have been the beginning of Manning's neck issues that resulted in his sitting out the entire 2011 season)
