About
(c)1996
DVD Transfer 154 is a transfer of recordings taped around late May and June 1996. This was the first tape I recorded after I bought the DVD recorder I use to make many of these transfers.
CONTENTS
1. WGNT Saturday Matinee ("Snoopy, Come Home" {partial recording}; the second in the traditionally animated series of films from the long-running comic strip "Peanuts", this 1972 film has Snoopy {accompanied by recently-introduced Woodstock} leave Charlie Brown to reunite with his original owner, a girl named Lila. Some notable pieces of trivia included this being the only film released during Vince Guaraldi's lifetime that he was not the composer for {Charles Schulz, Lee Mendelson and Bill Menendez wanting a more "film-like" score for the movies, thus bringing in the Sherman Brothers - known for their long-time work composing music for Disney - for this one. Schulz intended to bring Guaraldi- who still did the music for the TV specials - back for the next Peanuts film [1977's "Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown"] only for Guaraldi to die unexpectedly in 1976} and the last project for Cinema Center Films {the original film distribution division of CBS, as "Snoopy, Come Home" made just under a quarter of a million dollars, one-fourth of the film's $1 million budget} before CBS shuttered that division. Incidentally, the film's more depressing than usual for a Peanuts project owed to Charles Schulz undergoing a messy divorce around the time of the film's production {Schulz, according to Linus' voice actor Stephen Shea, directed Shea's voice acting himself; resulting in a less choppy delivery})
2. Believer's Voice of Victory (Evidences for Creation Series; part of series where Carl Baugh, longtime host of TBN's "Creation in the 21st Century" series and founder of the Creation Evidence Museum in Glen Rose, TX, joins Kenneth Copeland to discuss the creation of the stars and planets {basing on the creation account in Genesis 1:14-19}. May 29, 1996 broadcast)
3. Believer's Voice of Victory (same series; this time focusing on Noah's Ark and the global flood. May 30, 1996 broadcast)
4. Believer's Voice of Victory (conclusion of series {May 31, 1996 broadcast})
5. NBA on NBC snippet (1996 Western Conference Finals; Utah Jazz vs. Seattle SuperSonics {played at KeyArena in Seattle. Not sure based on the fact this runs just over 30 seconds which game it is {would have to be either Games 1, 2, 5 or 7})
6. Extra (partial recording. Featured stories include: Libby Weaver's interview with Kenny Kingston, who had been the psychic to Marilyn Monroe {the airdate was on June 1, which would have been Monroe's 70th birthday})
7. 20/20 (partial; featured is a report by Arnold Diaz {a longtime New York-based investigative journalist who worked for WCBS, WNYW and WPIX until his retirement in 2022} on the dangers of E. coli from undercooked ground beef {highlighted by the late 1992/early 1993 E. coli outbreak that killed 4 small children and sickened over 700 people {178 being left with permanent injury} that was traced to undercooked burgers there; with Diaz then discussing the topic with co-host Hugh Downs)
8. High Tide ("Beach Blanket Werewolf" {S2E13}. Guest stars include: Anthony Addabbo {best known for his role as Frank Powers in the 1994 NBC made-for-TV film "Love on the Run" and appearing in a bunch of TV movies that doubled as prospective TV pilots}, Julie Cialini, Patrice Chanel, Tracy Lindsey {Melchior - Tracy was using just her first and middle names professionally at this time; best known for her roles as Kristen Forrester Dominiguez on CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful" between 2001-17} and Therese Kablan)
9. Entertainment Tonight (partial recording with Mark Steines subbing for John Tesh alongside Mary Hart {this was probably not long before Tesh left to focus on his music career full-time}. Featured stories include: Jann Carl's report on director and former "Starsky & Hutch" star Paul Michael Glaser on his work in the movie "Kazaam" {starring Shaquille O'Neal} and his personal life following the death of his wife Elisabeth and daughter Ariel from AIDS-related illnesses {Ariel in 1988; Elisabeth - who spoke about her illness in a stirring, emotion-charged speech at the 1992 Democratic Convention - in 1994} after HIV-tainted blood was used in a blood transfusion when Elisabeth was giving birth to Ariel and whose son Jake was also HIV-positive though thankfully still healthy; Helen Reddy one of several 1970s stars who were the subject of a "Where Are They Now?" segment in People magazine; Mary visits Emilio and Gloria Estefan as Gloria prepares for her first tour in five years {and just her second after the 1990 accident that nearly left her paralyzed}; a look at a busy summer for Esquire photoshoots {with Rebecca Romjin being featured for July, followed by Sharon Stone in August}; Julie Moran interviewing Arnold Schwarzenegger on issues ranging from his next few films {"Eraser", "Jingle All the Way" and a rare villainous turn as Mr. Freeze in "Batman and Robin"} to buying golf clubs that had been used by John F. Kennedy and the future "Governator" having any possible interest in a political career of his own and birthdays {June 7; coincidentally fill-in host Mark Steines was celebrating his 32nd birthday on the job})
