Alaska The New Frontier β˜…πŸ₯… Educational Films from the 1960's

"Alaska became the forty-ninth state in 1958; ninety-one years after Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase of the territory from the Russians. In many ways it has changed radically since 1867, and since 1958; in others, it remains as it was centuries ago.

To explore the many faces and facets of the largest and second newest state, KCTA-TV of St. Paul, Minnesota, sent a film crew to Alaska to prepare this series. They and their cameras traveled from modern Anchorage to Point Hope, one of the oldest Eskimo villages in the state; they visited abandoned gold mines, Army missile sites, the governor’s office, the new settlements of homesteaders, the factories and the farms that combine to make Alaska a state of excitement and vigorous activity. The result is a series that portrays the state with the immediacy that can be achieved only by a blending of fine visual material and informed commentary."

6 episodes filmed in 1960 by KCTA-TV of St Paul, Minnesota for Classroom Use ... I think.

A 1960 series on Alaska ... 2 years after Alaska became the 49th State! In 1960 Alaska was still brand new and this is a wide eyed look at our shiny new state and all of its pieces. This is a Treasure!!! It shows Life Frozen back in 1960 and is a visual Time Capsule of places and people and vehicles long gone. Native American "Eskimo" sacred tribal dances never filmed before. An interview with an ancient Prospector who shows how he panned gold ... and who reminisces about life in the Klondike Gold Rush before the First World War - 120 Years Ago!! An interview with the (then current) Governor: who says the State may have trouble getting the money to meet it's 40 Million dollar State Budget ... he pins great hope on Tourism being their savior. An old Boeing Constellation (a Really Old 4 propeller aircraft with a distinctive Triple Rudder Tail! I haven't seen one in about 55 years.) landing and disembarking passengers (Lesson #3 at 1.5 Minutes in.). The Cold War was still Hot … those scary Russians were just over the horizon - almost spitting distance away: and this had a lot of folks' tails in a knot - back at the time. The WHOLE Feel of this is Authentic 1960 ... a parade of antiques - they just don't make them like this anymore folks!! (You can find an amazing amount of old classroom films moldering on YouTube ... I think I struck pay dirt here.)

NET πŸ₯… - National Educational Television - was the direct predecessor to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) ... and to this very day: PBS is still known for producing the highest quality educational and news programming. NET was launched on May 16 1954 by some forward thinking people - who hoped television had a more noble purpose, and destiny, than just being a machine for separating money from slack jawed hypnotized consumers. NET is older than most of us - and the "Grandfather" of all educational television!!!

This really ancient series was at the Start of a continuing tradition of excellence in educational video ... so now you can see what the state of the art in educational television was: Sixty Three Years ago. Television was just beginning to be explored as an educational medium at the time ... ripe with potential! Remember, this was still 9 years before Sesame Street would be Born ... literally the Dawn of Educational Television!!!

This IS a 'Golden Oldie' - I'm quite glad I brought it forward 63 Years!!!
