About

This tape contains two separate programs recorded consecutively. The first segment is a short documentary about Forest Industries Flying Tankers Limited, a company formed by an alliance of three forest companies with holdings on Vancouver Island and the adjacent British Columbia mainland. The documentary covers the company's two Martin Mars flying boats, Philippine Mars and Hawaii Mars, identified as the largest operational flying boats ever built and moored at Sproat Lake near Port Alberni, BC. Originally built for the US Navy as troop carriers, the aircraft were converted for aerial firefighting with water tanks and foam concentrate systems. The program details their operational capabilities: a wingspan of 200 feet, four piston engines, six-hour endurance, a delivery capacity of over 7,000 US gallons every seven minutes across a typical four-acre drop, and a geographic range extending from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State to the Okanagan Valley and the Queen Charlotte Islands. The segment also covers the company's maintenance operation, its inventory of spare parts and engineering drawings, and its secondary fleet of helicopters used for forest industry support work.

The second segment, beginning at approximately 4:51, is a CBS television profile of Charlotte Church, a Welsh singer identified in the segment as 13 years old at time of recording and described as the youngest singer ever to have topped the classical charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Her debut album Voice of an Angel is discussed, having sold 680,000 copies and gone gold in the United States with 750,000 shipped. The segment covers how Church was discovered after singing four lines of "Pie Jesu" on a British talent show where she had appeared to introduce her aunt, leading to a record deal with Sony Records. Her teacher discusses Church's exceptional vocal range and tone at age nine and a half. Church discusses her trust fund, her second album due out the following fall, and an upcoming appearance on the television series Touched by an Angel. Her mother Julia speaks about Church's attitude toward fame. The segment closes with a reference to a halftime appearance, the venue unrecoverable from the file.
