Kingu (キング “King”) was the mass-market monthly magazine launched in 1925 under the direction of Kōdansha publishing company founder Noma Seiji (野間清治) and renamed Fuji (富士) in 1943 under the wartime language policy. Designed as a broadly accessible “national mass magazine” rather than a specialist literary, political, or women’s periodical, it combined fiction, biography, moral essays, practical knowledge, humor, visual features, songs, games, and reader-participation columns. Its importance lies in its extraordinary reach: Kingu became the first Japanese magazine to surpass one million copies in circulation and was probably the most widely read general-interest magazine in Japan until the end of World War II. As a source, it is especially valuable for studying interwar mass culture, commercial publishing, household reading, popular nationalism, moral education, entertainment, and the formation of a shared “national” reading public before and during Japan’s wartime mobilization.
