Episode Selim III and the Nizam-ı Cedid: Ottoman Reform Before the Fall
Before the Tanzimat and the abolition of the Janissaries, Sultan Selim III attempted a bold military and administrative reform known as the Nizam-ı Cedid (New Order). Inspired by European drill and discipline, he created a modern army, established new schools, and tried to overhaul the treasury. But his reforms threatened the entrenched Janissary corps and conservative elites. In 1807, a rebellion led by Kabakçı Mustafa forced Selim to disband his new army and eventually cost him his throne—and his life. This episode explores Selim III's vision, the fierce resistance it sparked, and how his brief reign set the stage for the empire's later transformation. Along the way, we touch on his correspondence with Napoleon, the role of the ulema, and the tragic fate of a sultan who was too far ahead of his time.
