Ottoman Sultans: The Harem's Hidden Power

9 Oct 2026 · 9:10 · S6 E259

While popular culture often reduces the Ottoman harem to a backdrop of intrigue and luxury, recent scholarship reveals it as the empire’s most potent political engine. In this episode, we explore how the Valide Sultan, or Queen Mother, wielded influence that rivaled the Grand Vizier through the practice of 'Sultanate of Women.' We follow the lives of figures like Hürrem Sultan, who transformed from concubine to legal wife, and Kösem Sultan, whose regency spanned decades and shaped foreign policy. By examining the Enderun school’s role in raising elite slaves and the complex web of maternal kinship networks, we uncover how women controlled access to the throne, managed vast waqf endowments, and dictated succession crises. This conversation moves beyond the myth of the secluded palace to reveal a system where gender, power, and diplomacy intersected in unexpected ways.
