Ottoman Coffee Houses: The Digital Age of the 16th Century

10 Oct 2026 · 10 min · S6 E260

In this episode, we explore how the Ottoman Empire transformed coffee from a Yemeni religious ritual into a pervasive social institution that reshaped daily life across three continents. We trace the journey of the black bean from Mocha to Constantinople, focusing on the rise of the kavehane — coffee houses that became the epicenters of political debate, literary gossip, and intellectual exchange. Lucas and Luna discuss the initial suspicion by conservative religious scholars who feared these gatherings would foster sedition, leading to bans under Sultans Murad IV and Selim II. We examine the unique culture of the qahwa khana, where men gathered to drink thick, unfiltered brew, smoke hookahs, play backgammon, and engage in heated discussions about poetry, religion, and statecraft. The conversation highlights key figures like Hafiz Ahmed Pasha and the controversial poet Nef'i, whose satirical verses often sparked riots. We also look at how these spaces functioned as early news networks, spreading information faster than official gazettes could, and how they eventually became so integral to Ottoman civic life that even严厉的 bans failed to extinguish their popularity. This is a story of caffeine, censorship, and the power of public conversation.
