Episode 108. Never a Dull Moment
Welcome to the Autism Parent Club Podcast!
Are you parenting a child with autism and navigating the challenges of high support needs, communication barriers, challenging behaviors, medical concerns, or the uncertainty that comes with this journey? You’ve found your people.
We’re Chris and Becky—parents to a 19-year-old son with Level 3 autism and very high support needs. Each week, we share real-life stories from our journey, the things we’re learning along the way, and honest conversations about the joys, challenges, uncertainty, and everything in between.
In this episode:
In this episode of the Autism Parent Club Podcast, we’re sharing the real story of traveling with our 19-year-old son, Bridger, who has profound autism and is non-speaking, for a family wedding. From preparing for the flights and worrying about how he would handle the disruption in routine, to the wedding itself and the moments that actually went better than we expected, this trip reminded us that sometimes our biggest fears don’t happen the way we imagine. But then we got home…and the weekend that followed was a completely different story. Bridger experienced several days of intense distress, aggression, and behavioral challenges, leaving us trying to figure out what was causing the sudden change. Was it the disruption from travel? His GI issues? Medication? Or simply the aftermath of a huge change in routine? We talk honestly about the unpredictability of autism, traveling with a special needs adult, preparing for difficult situations, and the emotional roller coaster of celebrating a huge success one minute and facing a crisis the next. Because as autism parents, there really is never a dull moment!
