徳川幕府は15代将軍徳川慶喜にて終わりましたが、徳川本家自体はその後も残り、明治時代以降も存在しました。徳川本家16代を継承した徳川家達（いえさと）は、明治・大正・昭和にかけて重要な政治家として活動したのでした。
