Ecological Economics
Prof. Anamika Barua · IIT Guwahati
About
This course introduces Ecological Economics as an alternative framework for understanding economic activity within ecological limits. It critically examines the assumptions of neoclassical economics and explores how economic systems are embedded within social and ecological systems. The course integrates insights from ecology, economics, and social sciences to address contemporary challenges such as resource depletion, climate change, and sustainability. Emphasis is placed on systems thinking, human behaviour, institutions, and policy instruments for achieving socially just and ecologically sustainable development.
Intended audience: This course is intended for postgraduate students in economics, environmental studies, engineering, public policy, and sustainability-related fields. It is also suitable for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working on climate change, environment, water, energy, and sustainable development who wish to understand economic thinking within ecological limits
Prerequisites: There are no formal pre-requisites for this course. Participants are expected to have a basic undergraduate-level understanding of economics or environmental studies. Familiarity with introductory microeconomics or sustainability concepts will be helpful but is not mandatory.
