Line Commutated and PWM Rectifiers

Prof. Anandarup Das · IIT Delhi

Start with lecture 1 At NPTEL

About

The course covers different types of AC-DC converters. The technology of diode and thyristor based rectifiers is quite matured. However, they are slowly getting replaced by PWM converters for newer applications like EV and battery charging with improvement in size and efficiency of the converter. Thus, it is important to study and understand this subject keeping in mind the direction of future development.

Both the traditional line commutated rectifiers and the newer generation converters like PFC boost, AC-DC flyback or bridgeless PFC will be covered, with an emphasis for the latter. In addition, modeling and controller design for traditional three phase converter (AC-DC or DC-AC) will be taken up. Lectures will be supported by practical examples and followed by assignments for thorough understanding.

All the lectures will be delivered keeping in mind about the need for both UG and PG students. During the initial portion of a specific topic, the basics will be covered which is suitable for both types of students. Further, advanced topics will be introduced.

Intended audience: Students and professionals

Prerequisites: A first course (UG level) on power electronics is a pre-requisite.
