    4.1: What to Expect

Statistical studies are often centered on groups of individuals in society that may be affected in some way due to one or more of their characteristics. These groups are called populations. It is important in these studies that the population of interest be precisely defined to match the interests of the researcher. This chapter will discuss and define populations along with some important considerations and characteristics of these populations.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

    • Define and discuss populations, data, variables, and parameters.
    • Consider the importance of the practicality of studying certain populations.
    • Consider what established sources of data may be helpful to a research study.
    • Consider the importance of correctly defining a population in discrimination litigation.
