    9.4: Key Terms

Extractive foraging - the process of obtaining food that is embedded or protected by a hard or tough outer layer, such as underground roots, nuts, eggs, or wood-boring insects. This type of foraging requires intensive manipulation, often involving tool use, to access the food.

Rouge test – psychological experiment that assesses self-awareness by placing a mark on a subject's face. If the subject recognizes that the mark is on their own reflection in a mirror and tries to touch the mark on their own face, it indicates they have passed the test, showing self-recognition.

Theory of mind - the ability to understand that other people have their own mental states, such as beliefs, desires, and intentions, which may differ from one's own.
