    6: Conceptual Objective 6

    • 6.1: Waves
a wave is a disturbance that propagates, or moves from the place it was created. For water waves, the disturbance is in the surface of the water, perhaps created by a rock thrown into a pond or by a swimmer splashing the surface repeatedly. For sound waves, the disturbance is a change in air pressure, perhaps created by the oscillating cone inside a speaker. For earthquakes, there are several types of disturbances, including disturbance of Earth’s surface and pressure under the surface.
    • 6.2: Frequency and Pitch of Sound
This page covers sound pitch and its dependence on the frequency of sound waves, explaining that high frequencies yield high pitches and low frequencies create low pitches. It outlines the human hearing range (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz) and introduces infrasound and ultrasound. Additionally, it mentions that some animals, like dogs and bats, can hear ultrasound, with bats utilizing it for navigation through echolocation in dark environments.
    • 6.3: Speed of Sound, Frequency, and Wavelength
This page examines the nature of sound, emphasizing its properties—pitch, frequency, and wavelength—and their connection to the speed of sound, which varies across media and is influenced by temperature. It highlights that sound travels slower than light and shares practical applications such as echolocation. The relationship between speed, frequency, and wavelength is captured in the formula \(v_{\mathrm{w}}=f \lambda\).
