    1.6: Drug References

The Medical Assistant is required to have a working knowledge of drugs that the providers they work with prescribe most frequently. Having access to reliable and current drug information is vital for patient safety. The Medical Assistant does not prescribe drugs, nor does the Medical Assistant offer medical advice to patients. However, the Medical Assistant should be prepared to answer questions, identify side effects and adverse effects of drugs, and recognize indications for drugs within the Medical Assistant’s scope of practice and policies and procedures in the clinic. The MA should rely on reputable sources for drug safety. The following are high-quality, reliable sources of drug information.
