    1.3.3.5: Synthetic and Biosynthetic

The development of synthetic and biosynthetic drugs is always evolving. Many drugs are manufactured by synthesizing chemicals to create a desired compound. Biosynthetic drugs are manufactured using biological substances. Some vaccines have been developed using biosynthetic or genetically engineered technology. These vaccines contain proteins that mimic the structure of a virus or bacteria to produce an immune response in the body (National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases, n.d.).
