    1.3.3.3: Minerals

Minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium are vital for many body functions and good health. Mineral supplements can be prescribed or found over the counter (Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Consumer Version [NMCDCV], 2022a). Calcium, found in animal bones, shells, and rocks, is used by the human body to create strong bones. Calcium also plays an important role in cardiac function (Bers, 2002). Sodium, found in salt, helps the body maintain homeostasis, aids in controlling fluid balance, and plays a role in blood pressure regulation (Strazzullo & Leclercq, 2014).
