3.4: Medical Assistant’s Role in Prescriptions

Medical assistants cannot prescribe drugs or treatments for patients, however, in most states MAs are permitted to prepare prescriptions for providers to sign. Some states allow medical assistants to send prescription refills to the pharmacy under the supervision of the provider if there are no changes to the refill. The provider and medical assistant are responsible for checking their state laws regarding the scope of practice for medical assistants as it relates to prescriptions.
