Read only the part listed below. Take notes and answer questions as described. Each note taking instruction should be done in your own words, in 1-2 sentences or bullet points, unless otherwise stated.

    27.2 Female Anatomy and Physiology

    • Define and use the following terms:
      • Oocyte
      • Vulva
      • Granulosa cells
      • Atresia
    • Describe the structures of the external female genitals. Include the following:
      • Mons pubis
      • Labia majora
      • Labia minora
      • Glans clitoris
      • Hymen
      • Bartholin’s gland
    • Describe the structure and function of the vagina.
    • Explain the importance of the Bartholin's glands and lesser vestibular glands.
    • Describe the importance of the vaginal microbial community.
    • Describe the structure of the ovaries. Point out features that differ from or are the same as the testes.
    • Describe the process of oogenesis. For each stage of development, explain what happens in that step and when and where it develops:
      • Oogonium
      • Primary oocyte
      • Secondary oocyte
      • Mature ovum
    • Explain what polar bodies are and why they do not exist in spermatogenesis.
    • Describe the process of folliculogenesis. Explain what each stage represents and when it happens.
      • Primordial follicles
      • Primary follicles
      • Secondary follicles
      • Tertiary follicles
      • Ovulating follicle
      • Corpus luteum
    • Why do so many more primary follicles develop than are ovulated?
    • Describe the effects of the following hormones on the follicular cycle:
      • GnRH
      • FSH
      • LH
    • Describe the production of estrogen and how it changes with the ovarian cycle.
    • Describe how the effects of estrogen on GnRH change throughout the cycle.
    • Describe the role and origin of the corpus luteum and corpus albicans.
    • Describe the function and structure of the Fallopian tubes.
    • Explain how the oocyte travels from the ovary to the uterus.
    • Describe the general structure, location, and function of the uterus.
    • Describe the function and histology of the layers of the uterine wall:
      • Perimetrium
      • Myometrium
      • Endometrium
    • For each phase of the menstrual cycle describe what happens during that phase, what hormonal changes trigger it, and what is occurring in the ovarian cycle at that phase.
      • Menses
      • Proliferative
      • Secretory
    • Describe the structure and function of breasts, including the structure and function of the following components:
      • Mammary glands
      • Lactiferous ducts
      • Lactiferous sinuses
    • Explain how hormonal birth control works. Take the negative feedback cycles into account.
