Read only the part listed below. Take notes and answer questions as described. Each note taking instruction should be done in your own words, in 1-2 sentences or bullet points, unless otherwise stated.
22.5 Gas Transport
- Explain how the solubility of oxygen affects its transport.
- How does hemoglobin help compensate for the low solubility of oxygen?
- Describe the structure of hemoglobin.
- Explain how the conformational changes of hemoglobin with oxygen binding improve gas exchange at the lungs and the tissues.
- Explain what an oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve represents. Draw one and label it.
- What is the importance of the shape of the hemoglobin curve?
- What indicates how much oxygen is released to tissues? What will change this amount released?
- How do hemoglobin saturation curves change with pH? Why is this useful in the body?
- How do hemoglobin saturation curves change with temperature? Why is this useful in the body?
- How is fetal hemoglobin different from adult hemoglobin? Why is this important?
- Explain how carbon dioxide is transported in the blood. Particularly focus on how this differs from oxygen transport.
- Describe the bicarbonate buffer system. Predict how changes in carbon dioxide partial pressures will affect blood pH.
- Explain the difference between how oxygen binds to hemoglobin and how carbon dioxide does.
- Why is hemoglobin much less important to CO2 transport than to oxygen transport?
Watch the YouTube video Respiratory System, Part 2: Crash Course Anatomy & Physiology #32
- Describe how oxygen and CO2 are exchanged and transported in your body.
- Explain what happens when you hyperventilate and how breathing into a paper bag helps.
