    19.1.1: Student Notebook Assignment

You have one of two options for completing the Chapter Note Taking Guide:

    1. Print the Student Notebook Assignment from the textbook. This will result in a PDF of the Note Taking Guide that you can use for answering the questions. You will need to answer the questions on another document like Word or Google Docs.
    2. Download the attached Word document of the Student Note Taking Guide for Chapter 19 to use it to answer questions for all the lessons in Chapter 19. Answer the questions on the Word document.

Read only the part listed below. Take notes and answer questions as described. Each note taking instruction should be done in your own words, in 1-2 sentences or bullet points, or unless otherwise stated.

    19.1 Heart Anatomy

    • Describe the location and position of the heart in the body.
    • Explain how this location relates to the proper performance of CPR.
    • Draw a simple flow-chart illustrating blood flow through the heart. Include the following on your diagram:
      • Systemic circuit
      • Pulmonary circuit
      • Right atrium
      • Left atrium
      • Right ventricle
      • Left ventricle
    • Describe the structure and function of the pericardium. Describe how it lies around the heart and the structure of each of the following layers:
      • Fibrous pericardium
      • Serous pericardium
        • Epicardium
        • Parietal pericardium
    • Define a sulcus and describe the location of each sulcus on the heart.
    • Describe the layers of the heart. For each layer describe its function, where it is positioned and the tissue type.
      • Epicardium
      • Myocardium
      • Endocardium
    • Describe the differences between the right and left ventricles. Why do they differ?
    • What would it indicate if the right ventricle were enlarged? What is the indication if the left ventricle were enlarged?
    • Define and use the following terms:
      • Septa
      • Cardiomyocyte
    • What are the septa of the heart?
    • Why would a septum have a hole in it?
    • Describe the structure and function of each of the heart’s four chambers:
      • Right atrium
      • Right ventricle
      • Left atrium
      • Left ventricle
    • What is the function of the valves of the heart?
    • For each valve explain what is on either side of the valve. When is it open and when is it closed:
      • Right atrioventricular valve
      • Pulmonary valve
      • Left atrioventricular valve (mitral valve)
      • Aortic valve
    • What happens if the aortic valve malfunctions?
    • Describe the importance of coronary arteries and veins.
    • What happens if a coronary artery is blocked?
    • Draw a flowchart of circulation through the coronary arteries and veins.
